I finished the ink job on Rust today. So i thought I’d show her off. I’m not sure how I’m going to colour her. I prefer watercolour but I don’t want to screw it up, which I’m sure I’ll do. Oh well at least I’ve got the uncoloured version scanned in.

That’s really fucking good. I’m not sure I’ve seen this style from you before. Kudos.

I assume Rust (now a woman!) wears those gloves to keep her sword from rusting. Or can she control her powers now (unlike the last one if I recall correctly).
Great ink job by the way.

Actually Warbanks, I figure she has a space-age fiberglass katana…or something like that.

Thats is Awesome !!!!….I want to shoot a live version of that …thats kinda what I had in mind for that Sci-fi shoot I was bugging you about =)

Looks awesome, man. I dig that inking style!
As far as coloring goes, I always tended to fuck it up too… until I stopped painting on the originals and just colored the scans in Photoshop. ;)

Fibreglass? No no no. She’d want carbon fibre. Or if the tech is available, perhaps a sword made from carbon nano tubes.

I gave it a try. I’m no artist, but it was fun trying to come up with a Mutants and Masterminds style cell-shading:

Hey that’s good – is that Photoslop? I forgot to point out that her skin is a nice light rust colour. I think her hair is probably darker red. I was going to make her shirt army green and her vest maybe greyish. Hey we could have a colouring contest!

Yup, Photoshop. I can send you the file and you can monkey with it. All the colours are layered so it’s a snap to change them to whatever you want.

Ok, did some changing of the colors and playing around with the background. I made her hair grey instead of red because it just felt right. Maybe her powers destroy the colouring of her hair.

Have you read Snowcrash by Neal Stephenson? The bad guy in that book had a glass knife to get past metal detectors. The knife was really sharp and could cut through bullet proof clothing really easily. Perhaps her katana is something like that?

Joe, you are really outstanding at this! You and Toren should collabarate a lot more. Very exciting. The first picture is great, but the second is very menacing and ready to kick ass.

I have not read Snowcrash but any non-metal supersharp material fits the bill!

Snow Crash is probably my favorite book ever. I have the audiobook if you want to borrow it for a listen.
The glass-knife idea is cool, but they don’t last in extended combat. Raven (from Snowcrash) had several small ones that he’d use after throwing/breaking them. I think Toren’s idea of some advanced carbon-fibre works better if she’s going to keep the katana over an extended period.

What about a ceramic knife? Chefs are using them now, they’re super sharp and keep their edge a long time.
The only downside is that they’re a bit prone to chipping if you catch them wrong.
But on the plus side, the blade can either be white or a cool black.

I guess I’ll have to try them all and see whose fingers come off the cleanest!

Dierdre xxx is a British mercenary who was trained in various martial disciplines by WODEC. During her first government assignment she went AWOL and became affiliated for a short time with a crime syndicate where she maintained a very lucrative position as a “problem solver.” When the syndicate was more or less dissolved through internal conflict and WODEC operations, she put her skills on the freelance market. She has worked under or teamed up with various individuals and factions for the past 18 months, accruing warrants for her arrest in 7 different countries.
Rust is skilled, cunning and efficient. She enjoys her work but she is at all times the consummate professional. She keeps a complement of carbon fiber katanas that were designed and crafted for her by WODEC scientists and engineers. They are razor sharp and impervious to her corrosive powers.
